Frequently Asked Questions

How long is each session?

This depends on a variety of factors (age of student, learning style, etc.) Usually, Kindergarten through second grade is
1 hour, and 3-7th grade is 1.5-2 hours. This will be assessed & decided on during the in-person consultation.

Where do sessions take place?

Most sessions take place right at home. If you live too far outside of the area we service, or meeting at home isn't a possiblity, then our tutors are able to meet at convenient public locations such as libraries or coffee shops. We also offer virtual tutoring.

What materials should I have ready?

Materials vary depending on the session, so make sure to check with your tutor in advance. It is always helpful to have current/previous work or upcoming assignments.  (Of course, a quiet workspace is ideal!)
Our tutors bring their own supplies, as we don't stick with just a "pencil and paper" approach.

What is your cancellation policy?

You can cancel a session for any reason with at least 24 hours notice. Out of courtesy to our tutors, we do charge 50% for the session if it is cancelled within 24 hours of the scheduled time.
We are human and of course understand that life is unpredictable. The tutor is able to assist with special circumstances, and this will be on a case by case basis. If you need assistance with your appointment, send your tutor a message.

Do tutors give homework?

The decision to give homework is a holistic one, with input from both tutors & parents/students (when appropriate). Homework is effective when it is high quality, not necessarily high quantity. If our tutors feel the student would benefit from additional practice, then they may "assign" homework. This may be in the form of activities to do at home, whiteboard or worksheet practice, or free education apps.

How are students matched with tutors?

Experience, grade-specialty, and personality are all extremely important when tutor matching. This process is two-sided: it is important that the student enjoys working with the tutor, but it is also essential that the tutor believes it is a good fit.
Our in-person consultations are where this match is observed, before any definite tutoring sessions are established. Personal connections can make the difference in motivation and retention.

What are your tutoring rates?

Tutoring rates depend on the tutor's years of experience, certifications, and expertise.
Rates vary from $80/hr-$100/hr.
Prices include: planning time, travel to/from meeting spot, materials, communication between sessions, continuing education for tutors, etc.

What should I expect from the first in-person consultation?

This 1 hour session will be with the founder, along with the tutor best matched with your child. The student & parental guardians should be in attendance.
Have ready: recent school work/homework, current reading book (if applicable), report card, important emails from teachers, and anything else you might find helpful to share.
We will all meet to begin, and then the tutor & founder will meet with the student for about 30 minutes to establish a baseline. Finally, we will all reconvene to decide if the tutor/student is a good fit, what the goals are for the rest of the year, tutoring times/days, and how to proceed. Within 48 hours, you will receive a pdf highlighting the consultation goals & helpful websites & apps to use. Consultations start at $200.
